Chapter 37

Jason Goons hadn’t consumed an entire meal in three long days since leaving the colony. He loved Felix and Charlotte, but at times like the present, Felix’s temper terrified him. They left poor Charlotte in the dark all these years, but for her sake, maybe it was best, he thought. Goons had seen things Felix would do to those who failed to follow through on his demands. He didn’t want to be another statistic. On the three-day trip, the one thought that kept coming up was the fact that Felix knew Lisa was Frank’s daughter. Why hadn’t he mentioned it?

He knew Frank Robinson must be found, and this issue extinguished, and after watching that investigator on television last night; he knew his problems just got much worse. The sooner he could return to safety within the confines of the colony, the better. After dying his hair and mustache the oddest shade of red he had ever seen, he walked the front desk of the grungy side road motel after doing one last check of his room, dropped the key off and left the area determined to not only stop Frank Robinson but this investigator and that Rachel girl he should’ve abducted for himself weeks ago, she must be the other person who identified him.

Goons, now known as forty-one-year-old Richard Sommer, drove his stolen vehicle across four lanes of traffic and navigated his way toward the home of the retired deputy chief.

Frank Robinson sat on his covered patio sipping on a cup of hot peppermint tea. This time of year always seemed to cause his allergies to flare up. Unplugging his phone from the short cord, he pressed the number to check for any updates from the investigator.

Trying to conceal the smile which must be relevant in his voice, he said, “Rose, good morning. How are you?”

“Frank, good to hear from you. I’m well and you?”

“Doing okay.” He answered, more questioning himself. “Any news from the interview we did?”

“Not a lot of tips on Jason Goons but I finished an interesting call just a few minutes ago,” Rose said, then explained in detail the conversation.

“That’s interesting Rose. This sounds like it’s connected.” He said, rubbing his four-day-old beard, then added, “Have you gotten in touch with the officer on this yet?”

“No, not yet. I was googling her information, just as you called, as a matter of fact.”

“Go ahead then Rose, let me know how it goes. I would love to be….” he was saying and stopped at once, “Hang on Rose!” He exclaimed, then ran down the sidewalk, still clinging onto the phone.

“Frank, Frank, what’s going on?” Rose said in a panic.

The phone went silent. The investigator could hear heavy breathing and what sounded like someone yelling, but not able to understand what was being communicated. She ran to her bedroom, grabbing her keys and wallet, jumped in her new rental car and rushed to Frank’s home. Something wasn’t right, and she needed to help. Now wishing she had never asked Frank or Harry to be involved in the interview, she knew this case had to be solved.
